CHELVA – PEÑA CORTADA – CALLES

Because a very dear friend of mine visited me, we couldn’t stay home with arms folded. That's why I surprised Eszter with a trip to nature. It would have been difficult to get there on our own, so we joined the Erasmus organized tour. Following this road, we pass through the municipalities of Chelva and Calles and admire one of the greatest hydraulic works in the Valencian community: the Peña Cortada aqueduct.

So we left the bus in the heart of the Moorish quarter, where we found the first signs that led us through the labyrinthine medieval neighborhood, all the way to the Chelva River that we crossed. Following the same section as the Ruta del Agua, pursuing the signs for the trail, we achived an asphalt road in the village of Calles. From here we continued on the Rambla de Alcotas and moving up a lush landscape, by which we reached the first tunnels of the Roman aqueduct. That lead us through the interior of the mountain, allowed us to admire the magnificent landscape in some places. Beautiful windows were carved into the rock. This section of the aqueduct, located in the Barranco de la Cueva del Gatón in Calles, is one of the most colorful and magnificent parts of this monument, dating from the 1st century AD. Passing through the vertical gap leading to the bridge aqueduct, we descend again to the Rambla.

In this part we were surrounded by riverside vegetation, then we reached the border of the Torrecilla mound and returned to Chelva.
